Everyone defines success, meaning, and quality in slightly different ways. Mental and physical health is intertwined. Check out our ideas to improve your quality of life. These simple daily habits can increase your well-being and make each day more enjoyable.
5 Simple Changes
Don’t go overboard. Take a look at this list and try whatever you seem to be missing, one at a time. Then after a week or so, try another, and so on.
1. Get More Sleep Every Night
Most grown adults need between 6-9 hours of sleep each night. Some do fine with a little less, while others require more. You know yourself better than anyone. Do you feel sluggish in the morning or mid-afternoon? Are you exhausted each evening? This might be a clue that you need more sleep.
If you’re having difficulty falling asleep, consider going to bed and waking up at the same time every day. Put down the phones and unplug the laptops at least an hour before bedtime. If you wake up often in the middle of the night, keep the lights off and walk around the house quietly until you’re ready to try sleeping again.
2. Behave Kindly Toward Others
Random acts of kindness improve the quality of life for you and the beneficiaries of your actions. Find nonprofit organizations in your area doing something you believe is important. Consider volunteering for them either weekly or monthly.
You can also do small things every day to help improve other people’s lives. This might be returning the shopping cart to the store when you’re done. You can buy the person behind you in line a cup of coffee. Or spend a few hours with dogs at a local shelter, playing with them or taking a few for a walk.
Helping others can help you feel good about yourself. You also connect with your community in a way that makes you feel a part of it. This can lessen feelings of loneliness and isolation.
3. Stay Active
Exercise helps on several levels. It lessens anxiety and stress. Staying active improves your heart health, improving digestion and emotional stability. It also keeps your weight down, helps you sleep better at night, improves memory and muscle tone, and more.
Exercising can also be a social activity if you join a fitness class or running group. It gets you outside, meeting and interacting with other people. You won’t feel as lonely, even if it’s only 30 minutes daily.
Meditating can lower your blood pressure and stress levels. Find a comfortable place to sit and close your eyes for 5-20 minutes daily. It doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming.
Breathe deeply and slowly. Count your breaths to start and let your mind rest or recharge by thinking about nothing. You may find yourself drifting off and thinking about work or your plans later that day. Don’t judge yourself. Just gently bring your awareness back to your breath.
5. Practice Yoga
Yoga is an easy way to move your body, breathe deeply, strengthen muscles, and feel better simultaneously. If you find a local yoga studio, classes can be a great way to get started and meet like-minded people.
Teachers usually advertise whether their class is best for beginners or experienced yogis. Plenty of videos on YouTube can show you poses to fit your experience and interest. You can also do this at home whenever you find the time.
