​​Your Soda Habits Could be Destroying Your Life

The Problem 

Okay I’m going to be the one to say it… soda or is it pop? (that’s a whole different discussion) may just be destroying your life. LITERALLY! You came to us for a reason, and you’re going to throw it all away all because of bubbles? Not worth it if you ask me.

But ahhh, the bubbles, the taste, the cold in your hand, the caffeine, the sweetness, that satisfying *kchk* it makes when you pop the top open. It’s tempting isn’t it? That’s how they get you! 

 The incessant TV commercials and internet ads, the endless flavors and marketing iterations designed to keep us drinking more and more… soda.

 I guess you can’t fault soda manufacturers for wanting to make some money. Whose fault is it that you drink soda anyway? The answer is simple: It is your fault. And if you’re not ready to own up to it quite yet, feel free to blame dopamine.

The Science

Dopamine is a feel-good chemical, and your brain interprets it as pleasure. When your body seeks pleasure, your brain tries to find a way to stimulate a dopamine release. And what’s a popular go-to? Soda or pop… (I’m still not sure)

Soda and foods with high amounts of sugar can provide a bigger dopamine release, which can explain your cravings. I’m here to tell you it’s a vicious cycle and the more you drink it, the more your brain seeks high sugary foods and that Coke you love so much. 

If you’re habitually drinking super-sugary soda, here’s what you’re doing:

  • Consuming enormous amounts of sugar, other natural sweeteners, and/or artificial sweeteners that can have a significant impact on blood sugar and the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar levels and your brain’s ability to understand when you’ve eaten enough.
  • Taking in more calories than you might if you didn’t consistently drink soda
  • Promoting weight gain and skin aging
  • Making life more difficult (and probably more expensive) for your teeth

The Solution

Obviously quitting cold turkey and banking on sheer willpower won’t exactly do the trick. You need some other tips to help you along your way. 

  • Distance yourself from soda. When you go to the store make sure you’re not hungry so you don’t go grabbing that pack of soda
  • Avoid getting hungry! When you’re hungry you start craving everything. Have snacks on hand or prep your food earlier in the week, no matter what you do just make sure you’re not hungry!
  • Opt for a healthy treat. Have some fruit on hand, sugar free gum or even yogurt. Way better options in the end. 
  • Try to manage your stress levels. Isn’t that easier said than done? Stressing not only has so many side effects to your body but cravings are at the top of the list. When that stress kicks in try going for a walk or taking a break from whatever is stressing you out. Get outside and let that cold air do the trick. 

What are my optionsThe Options

Well, switching to diet soda seems like the easiest way to stop drinking soda. But, let’s just say that isn’t always the best option. Although they’re low in sugar they have little nutritional value and still contain those pesky acids that your dentist won’t love. 

And if you think trading soda for juice, sports drinks, or energy drinks is the answer, guess again, because high liquid sugar intake is likely the biggest culprit of health issues linked to excessive soda consumption.

 So, is one glass of orange juice bad for you? If you occasionally drink a limited amount of sugary drinks, is it ruining your health for good?

 That’s not necessarily what we’re saying. But we are saying that a consistent, super-sugary drink habit isn’t helping you achieve health goals.

In the end it’s just better for you

When it comes down to it, just stop drinking soda when you can. None of us are perfect and we’re the first to admit that a nice cold soda on vacation is one of life’s great pleasures. But we can all be a little better and try to kick out those darn sugar-laden beverages. In the long run it’ll just make us all feel better and that’s what we’re all about.
